Magnetic Resonator Piano
Album cover commissioned by Jack Armitage for his unreleased album, Magnetic Resonator Piano.
The design explores the emergence of life through vibration, resonance, and self-organizing systems. Drawing from the inner mechanics of the piano, including its strings, harmonics, and acoustic behavior. A speculative organism shaped by diffraction patterns and wave interactions.
Sculpted digitally the structure translates these ideas into a biomorphic entity, where flowing appendages and clustered forms suggest both mechanical components and living tissue. The result is a hybrid between instrument and organism, an artificial lifeform that appears to generate waves as if producing sound.
“Strengjavera (“string being”) is an installation that delves into the concept of self-organizing systems through the interaction of artificial life programs with an acoustic grand piano. Viewers are invited to witness the unpredictable yet mesmerizing patterns that emerge as the piano’s strings are set into motion by electromagnetism, controlled by biomimetic simulations. The piece explores the potential for agential systems to adapt and evolve in real-time, creating a dynamic and ever-changing soundscape that reflects the complexity and beauty of natural systems. By blurring the boundaries between technology and nature, Strengjavera prompts viewers to reflect on the relationship between human agency and autonomous systems, while also celebrating the beautiful natural acoustics of the piano in novel and unheard ways.”
